Skills Pay the Bills
Greetings to all the dreamers, doers, and game-changers out there! Today marks the beginning of our journey on the "Work Smarter" blog, a space dedicated to empowering entrepreneurs like you to help your businesses thrive by working smarter, not harder. I'm thrilled to kick off this discussion with a topic that’s crucial to your success: the undeniable value of your skills.
A Revelatory Conversation
It began a while back with a conversation that changed my perspective forever. When a career coach asked me to describe what I was good at, the only thing that immediately came to mind was some of my past professional experience, which included “clerical work,” so that’s what I said. She pointed out something that hit home: specificity is key. She told me, "When I'm looking to hire, I skip over people who can't articulate what they're capable of doing."
As we dove deeper, I realized I had undervalued a vast array of skills that were not only useful but also lucrative. This conversation was a wake-up call, highlighting how often we overlook our own capabilities.
The Value of Specificity in Skills
Why is being specific so important? In this competitive world, your ability to articulate precisely what you bring to the table can set you apart. Whether it's to a prospective client or an employer, clarity about your skills can be the difference between being overlooked and getting noticed.
The Underestimated Skill Set
Like me, you might be sitting on a goldmine of skills considered "ordinary" or "commonplace." But here's the truth: these skills are far from basic; they're your ticket to standing out. Administrative tasks, for example, require organization, attention to detail, and time management—invaluable skills in any business setting.
Technical Skills That Pay Off
In today's digital age, technical skills are in high demand. Proficiency in tools like Canva for graphic design, video editing software, basic coding, SEO optimization, and data analytics are just a few skills that can significantly enhance your marketability. These are skills that, while often overlooked, can open doors to new opportunities and niches.
Realizing and Articulating Your Worth
So, how do you begin to unpack and articulate these skills? Start by taking inventory of all the tasks you perform, no matter how small they seem. Reflect on the tools and technologies you use and consider how they contribute to your overall effectiveness. Plenty of resources are also available to help you expand and validate your skills, from online courses on platforms like Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, to Udemy.

Your skills are indeed your currency in today's dynamic market. Be sure to invest them wisely. In closing, I encourage you to recognize and celebrate your abilities.
